We live in an age where there are thousands upon thousands of books, websites, and videos of people telling us what we need to do to lose 20 pounds in a month, or become disease free and full of energy by eating this kind of diet. I feel like every other day a new method for achieving optimum weight loss, energy, and health is developed. And, there is a reason for this. Because, everyone wants to be healthy! We all want to live a life free of illness and full of health and vitality. I know I do! So many people have stepped up to the plate to help people achieve this goal. And yet, there is an obesity epidemic in the world. We are getting fatter and fatter every year. Illnesses like heart disease, cancer, and diabetes are on the rise. There are so many resources out there and yet we still can’t get a grip on our health.
There are many reasons for this. For one, and a major issue that needs to be fixed, is the easy access to unhealthy food choices and poor access to healthier options. Every corner hosts some fast food chain with dollar menus that make running through the drive through much quicker and cheaper than cooking a healthy home cooked meal. Access to organic fruits and vegetables is expensive and many busy, working moms find it much quicker after a long day at work to just zip through the drive through than bother to make a healthy meal.
Another reason, and one that should speak to you, is these plans are difficult to implement for busy, working moms. I remember trying to follow a certain plan and still make sure my family was able to eat. Without going into specifics, the plan I was trying to follow called for me to eliminate certain food groups from my diet. Well, I didn’t feel comfortable with limiting these things from my growing toddler’s diet, and so, I ended up trying to cook meals for myself and then separate meals for my family. Well, after working an 8 hour day and then coming home to cook TWO meals, I become worn out and I ditched the plan after about 2 weeks. Not to mention, I was exhausted trying to find the time to do the workouts associated with the plan.
So why didn’t this work? Well, it didn’t work because it didn’t suit my lifestyle. I was trying to work for the plan rather than have the plan work for me. I knew what I wanted to accomplish by following this plan and I knew why I wanted to accomplish it. But I didn’t have a clear idea of how to make the plan fit my busy working mom life. And, now that I think about it, the plan is completely ridiculous for any mom who works 40 hours a week and has a family to love. I had failed to realize my strengths and weaknesses and how they could support or hinder my success on this plan. For me, and I’m sure its the case for you too, following a plan and sticking to a certain meal plan and exercise regime was not ideal for my life. I’m sure those exercise and diet plans help a bunch of people every year, but for me they are not realistic and every plan I’ve tried to implement in my life, I’ve given up on it before I could finish it. Plans don’t work for this busy, working mom!
I’m sure at this point you are wondering, well how am I supposed to achieve my health goals if I don’t follow a plan? How am I supposed to create a healthy lifestyle if I don’t have someone telling me how to do it? Well NEWSFLASH!!! All of these health experts created these plans because they suited their lifestyle. They created a plan that worked for them. They discovered what worked for them and what didn’t work for them. And that is what you have to do. You have to find what you are capable of achieving and in what reasonable time frame.
For me, I found meal prepping on Sundays worked wonders for me. I had the time on Sundays to spend an hour or so in the kitchen prepping clean, healthy, whole meals my family and I could cook and eat throughout the week. I also found that my best way to work out was finding FREE workouts online to perform during the week. I set a goal of doing AT LEAST 3 workouts a week. This fit into my lifestyle. Now I didn’t lose 20 pounds in a month. But, I developed healthy habits and overtime, my health improved and I did lose weight. More importantly though, I felt healthier and happier.
Now, my plan for becoming healthier may work for you and it may not. The key take away here is to find what works for you and what doesn’t work for you. There is no wrong way of doing things unless you do nothing! That is the only way you are not going to achieve your weight loss goals.
